How to Download Instagram Reels
Instagram doesn't offer a built-in way to save Reels to your device. The in-app Save button adds a video to a private collection inside Instagram — not to your phone's storage. For the actual file, you need a third-party tool.
What you need to know about Instagram downloads
The most common stumbling block is getting the right link. In the Instagram app, tap the three-dot menu on a Reel and choose Copy link — that's the direct post URL you need. Don't copy a URL from a story preview or a DM where someone forwarded you the Reel, as those links are temporary and sometimes expire before the downloader can use them.
Carousel posts — the swipeable ones with multiple images or videos — work a bit differently. Paste the carousel link and the downloader detects all the media inside that post. You'll see each item listed separately, so you can pick just the videos or grab everything at once.
Quality is something people often ask about. Instagram re-encodes every video on upload, compressing to 1080p maximum for Reels. What you download is exactly what Instagram serves — there's no higher-quality original layer above that. If the downloaded video looks slightly softer than you expected, that's Instagram's own compression, not the downloader.
If you're a creator saving your own Reels for cross-posting, the version you get here is the clean original as Instagram stores it — ready to post to TikTok, YouTube Shorts, or anywhere else without an Instagram logo sitting in the corner.

Frequently asked questions
Do Instagram Stories work too?
Public Stories and highlights are supported. Private account content is not accessible — the downloader can only reach what's publicly viewable.
Will the download have a watermark?
No. The file you download is the clean video as Instagram serves it, with no extra watermark added by the downloader.
Can I download from a private Instagram account?
No. Private accounts restrict access to approved followers only. No external tool can bypass that restriction.
Can I download Instagram photos as well as videos?
Yes. Paste an image post URL and the downloader extracts the full-resolution photo. For carousels, all images and videos in the post are available.
Will Instagram notify the creator if I download their Reel?
No. Instagram does not notify creators when someone saves or downloads their content through third-party tools. Only direct in-app interactions like likes, comments, and shares generate notifications.
Does this work for Instagram Live replays?
Instagram Live replays that have been saved to a creator's profile work the same as regular video posts. Live streams in progress are not downloadable.
How do I get the right link on desktop?
On instagram.com in a browser, click on the Reel to open it, then copy the URL from your browser's address bar. It will look like instagram.com/reel/[ID]/.
What is the maximum video quality available?
Instagram caps Reels at 1080p. If the original was filmed at 4K, Instagram compresses it down before storing. The download matches whatever quality Instagram serves for that post.
Can I download multiple Reels at once?
You can download carousel posts (multiple items in one post) together. For individual Reels from different posts, each requires a separate link and download at this time.
Saving an Instagram Reel takes about 15 seconds — copy the link from the app, paste it in, and you have a clean MP4 ready to keep or repurpose anywhere.
